The Postwar Progenitor The Bentley Mark VI marked a radical change for Rolls-Royce. It was the first car to be offered by the company with factory built coachwork. The Standard Steel Saloon body was produced at Pressed Steel's factory. Powered by a six cylinder in-line F-head engine (inlet over exhaust) with a capacity of originally 4,257 cc the car performed really impressive. From those coachbuilders who had remained in business but few were able to significantly enhance the balanced lines of the standard coachwork. About 20 % of the Bentley Mark VIs' were fitted with coach-built bodies. From 1949 left hand drive MkVIs were available; from 1951 onward an engine with increased capacity of 4.566 cc did improve performance. Production of the Bentley R Type commenced in 1952. The factory saloon coachwork was indistinguishable from that of the Bentley Mark VI up to the rear doors, the back however covered under a one-piece boot lid a more spacious luggage compartment. By special order the R-Type was delivered as rolling-chassis to become subject of custom coachwork. Its Rolls Royce sister car was the Silver Dawn...a rare instance of a Bentley model preceding its Rolls Royce equivalent.
1956 Rolls Royce James Young Coachbuilt Silver Cloud
The Rolls Royce With Fins: SWA88 Direct Successor to the R-Type & Silver Dawn BEST IN CLASS WINNER BALBOA PARK AUTO MUSEUM GREATEST SHOW ON TURF 2007 One of only 9 ever built and on only the 43rd Silver Cloud Chassis. This car was custom bodied by legendary coachbuilder James Young, Ltd. and is amongst the most rare of any Rolls Royce series. It features a handcrafted all-aluminum body, custom interior and very few parts in common with Rolls Royce works-built Silver Clouds beyond chassis and drivetrain. It features highly unusual nods to 1950s American styling including hardtop styling cues and even modest tail fins. In 1956, it sold for $19,600 a 50% premium over a factory Silver Cloud and equal to the cost of the average home in the US. It is powered by a 4.9 liter straight 6 cylinder engine and coupled with a 4 speed HydraMatic transmission produced under license from General Motors
